So, you’re planning your wedding and it’s time to talk cake! As a wedding photographer I have to confess…sometimes my absolute favourite part of the wedding meal is the cake! MmmmmMMMMmm!

Here are some tips from the ultimate wedding cake artist Tracy from Sugar By Tracy

Wedding Cakes

1-The first thing to consider when talking to a cake artist about the cake for your upcoming wedding is to determine the amount of guests and/or servings you will need.

Tracy advises that if you plan to have another dessert option available through your caterer, then you should count on cake servings for 50-60% of your guests.

If your beautiful custom made creation will be the exclusive dessert for your guests, a good serving number would be 80% of your guests!

2- When choosing the theme of your wedding and incorporating that theme into your cake design, keep in mind that less is more. Sometimes a cake decorated with a few small details can make a bigger impact! Remember that a cake artist is a creative professional. They design these creations for a living and are a great resource! Have a look at one of her most recognized cakes featured on Junebug Weddings! A little bit of creative freedom will go a long way in making sure your cake is personalized to you and you won’t have the same cake as every other bride getting married that season! Also think about adding some fun and adventurous flavours to your cake! If your husband to be loves his beer, you can think about adding a Guiness and Bailey’s flavoured tier. If you’re more of a destination bride, maybe Mango Mojito is more your jam, or Pina Colada! The combinations are absolutely endless!

3-Let’s talk booking! Like any wedding professional, cake artists tend to book up quickly. You should contact your chosen artist 9-12 months in advance to secure your date! Their calendars start to fill up and dates become unavailable, especially with our short summer wedding season in Alberta! Be prepared to pay a deposit and sign a contract with your cake artist as well!

4-This is a biggie! Make sure your cake artist has the appropriate credentials, i.e. food handling permits, licensed health inspected kitchen, and food safety! Many venues require proof of the artist’s documentation prior to delivering your wedding cake.

5-Once your day is over and you’ve recovered from all the fun, make sure to send your cake artist a few photos of their creation! Often they never get to see the photos of the happy couple cutting the cake!!
